A University of Queensland PhD project investigating methods of using iron salts for sustainable water management solutions has won a prestigious industry award.

The 2023 QLD Student Water Prize, presented at the annual Australian Water Association Queensland Gala Dinner and Awards Night, was awarded to
Phd Student Zhetai Hu for his work on Novel Usages of Iron Salts for Achieving Sustainable Water Management.

Zhetai’s study focused on novel applications of iron salts for an integrated technology solution that will enable water utilities to establish a self-reliant and more secure supply chain to meet its demand for iron salts, at lower economic and environmental costs, and simultaneously achieve recovery of high-quality bioenergy.

Zhetai has also recently had a paper published in Nature journal on “Integrated urban water management by coupling iron salt production and application with biogas upgrading”.

Zhetai Hu is now in the running for the National Student Water Prize which will be announced at the Ozwater’24 conference in May 2024.
